To Kabat-Zinn, meditation is important because it brings about a state of "mindfulness," a condition of "being" rather than "doing" during which you pay attention to the moment rather than the past, the future, or the multitudinous distractions of modern life. In brief, rather poetic chapters, he describes different meditative practices and what they can do for the practitioner. The idea that meditation is "spiritual" is often confusing to people, Kabat-Zinn writes; he prefers to think of it as what you might call a workout for your consciousness. This book makes learning meditation remarkably easy (although practicing it is not). But it also makes it seem infinitely appealing. --Ben Kallen
Author: Jon Kabat-Zinn

Publisher: Hachette Books

Year: 1995

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1060/1663/files/view_archive_2f7a4fef-2aa5-4a3e-8ccc-bde18dcc0f23.jpg?v=1780459096
the-figgs-ali-bryan
The Figgs
Meet the Figgs. Born to an Indian academic and his wife, Gogol is afflicted from birth with a name that is neither Indian nor American nor even really a first name at all. He is given the name by his father who, before he came to America to study at MIT, was almost killed in a train wreck in India. Rescuers caught sight of the volume of Nikolai Gogol's short stories that he held, and hauled him from the train. Ashoke gives his American-born son the name as a kind of placeholder, and the awkward thing sticks. Awkwardness is Gogol's birthright. He grows up a bright American boy, goes to Yale, has pretty girlfriends, becomes a successful architect, but like many second-generation immigrants, he can never quite find his place in the world. There's a lovely section where he dates a wealthy, cultured young Manhattan woman who lives with her charming parents. They fold Gogol into their easy, elegant life, but even here he can find no peace and he breaks off the relationship. His mother finally sets him up on a blind date with the daughter of a Bengali friend, and Gogol thinks he has found his match. Moushumi, like Gogol, is at odds with the Indian-American world she inhabits. She has found, however, a circuitous escape: "At Brown, her rebellion had been academic ... she'd pursued a double major in French. Immersing herself in a third language, a third culture, had been her refuge--she approached French, unlike things American or Indian, without guilt, or misgiving, ore expectation of any kind." Lahiri documents these quiet rebellions and random longings with great sensitivity. There's no cleverness or showing-off in The Namesake, just beautifully confident storytelling. Gogol's story is neither comedy nor tragedy; it's simply that ordinary, hard-to-get-down-on-paper commodity: real life. --Claire Dederer
Author: Jhumpa Lahiri

Publisher: Mariner Books

Year: 2004

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1060/1663/files/view_archive_2bc752d7-f6d8-494d-9e56-13382e07e442.jpg?v=1780459099
the-dharma-bums-jack-kerouac
The Dharma Bums
Who were all these strange ghosts rooted to the silly little adventure of earth with me? The author left it to readers' imaginations to fill in the blanks. In this delightful story, Karon paints a complete picture of the events surrounding the wedding of Mitford's best-loved couple, and chronicles the poignant and often hilarious reactions to the nuptial news by the tightly knit North Carolina community. All the details cherished by those who are enchanted by weddings are offered here, from the color of the bridal outfit (aquamarine) to the choice of flowers (virgin's bower and hydrangeas). When the wedding bells finally ring, the pews are packed with the people who make Mitford special: ornery Uncle Billy, delightful Miss Sadie, indispensable Louella, and the cantankerous Emma Newland. And there's not a dry eye in the house when Father Tim's problematic foster child Dooley Barlowe sings for the two people who love him the most. A Common Life is not just a wedding story. It's also an intimate portrait of the unfolding love between Cynthia and the shy Father Tim, complete with fears and hesitations, professions of commitment, and Barnabas the dog delivering love letters. But there's nothing heavy-handed here. The tensions don't run any higher than wondering if Cynthia will make it to the wedding on time after getting locked inside her own bathroom, or guessing if Esther will make her famous three-layer orange marmalade cake for the reception. Told in the warm, down-home style that Karon has built her reputation on, A Common Life is sweet without being saccharine, charming without being cloying. It's an invitation to a literary reunion of the best kind, and like all weddings, it will probably coax a few tears and plenty of smiles. --Cindy Crosby
Author: Jan Karon

Publisher: Viking Adult

Year: 2001

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1060/1663/files/view_archive_9852bcc8-768c-449c-b7d2-8082b160f264.jpg?v=1780459111
travel-best-bets-claire-newell
Travel Best Bets
Valuable professional insights that will make every trip memorable, safe and seamless. Accordingly, Leon Craig's interpretation of the plays - focusing primarily on Macbeth and King Lear, but including extensive comments on Othello, The Winter's Tale, and Measure for Measure - are intended to demonstrate what can be gained from reading Shakespeare 'philosophically.' Shakespeare, Craig argues, had a persistent fascination with the relationship between politics and philosophy, and even more precisely, with the idea of a philosophical ruler. Macbeth and King Lear are given detailed exposition for the special light they cast on tensions between philosophy and politics, knowledge and power. They show how the pursuit of an adequate understanding of certain practical issues - transient yet recurring - necessarily leads to considerations that far transcend the particular circumstances in which these practical problems arise. Metaphysics, cosmology, and man's confrontation with nature, were made dramatically manifest by Shakespeare to challenge and promote philosophic activity among his audience and readers. Unconventional in its approach, but working within the tradition of such critics as Allan Bloom and Harry Jaffa, Craig's book makes a substantial contribution to understanding the general principles of Shakespearean drama.
Author: Leon Harold Craig

Publisher: University of Toronto Press

Year: 2003

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1060/1663/files/view_archive_357438e7-230a-4a32-a13a-7882ae538cda.jpg?v=1780459117
the-platonian-leviathan-leon-harold-craig
The Platonian Leviathan
Thomas Hobbes's influential political treatise, Leviathan, was first published in 1651. Many scholars have since credited him with a mechanistic outlook towards human nature that established the basis of modern Western political philosophy from the perspective of social contract theory. In The Platonian Leviathan, Leon Harold Craig weaves together philosophy, political science, and literature to offer a radical re-interpretation of Hobbes's most famous work. Though Craig begins and concludes his analysis with discussions of Herman Melville's Moby-Dickand includes an essay on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, the bulk of his two-part commentary centres on Leviathan. Part One shows the overt principles of Hobbes's political prescription to be untenable, and strongly suggests that Hobbes himself did not subscribe to these rules, using them only as tools to further his philosophical goals. In Part Two, Craig displays the underlying Platonism of Hobbes's thinking. Fiercely devoted to one another, George and Lennie plan to save up to finance their dream of someday owning a small piece of land. The pair seems unstoppable until tragedy strikes and their hopes come crashing down, forcing George to make a difficult decision regarding the welfare of his best friend.\r \r The novel is set on a ranch in Soledad, CA. Author Frank Bergon recalls reading Of Mice and Men for the first time as a teenager living in the San Joaquin Valley and remembers how he saw “as if in a jolt of light the ordinary surroundings of [his] life become worthy of literature.” Steinbeck works to propagate the notion that meaningful stories emerge from the marginalized; that even those on the fringes of society can make deserving contributions to the literary canon.\r \r Source: http://www.steinbeck.org/about-john/his-works/\r \r \r ----------\r Also contained in:\r - [Cannery Row / Of Mice and Men](https://openlibrary.org/works/OL23172W/Cannery_Row_Of_Mice_and_Men)\r - [Grapes of Wrath / The Moon is Down / Cannery Row / East of Eden / Of Mice and Men][1]\r - [Novels and Stories 1932-1937](https://openlibrary.org/works/OL23167W)\r - [Short Novels of John Steinbeck](https://openlibrary.org/works/OL23185W/The_Short_Novels_of_John_Steinbeck)\r - [Steinbeck](https://openlibrary.org/works/OL23183W/Steinbeck)\r - [Steinbeck Pocket Book](https://openlibrary.org/works/OL16051131W/The_Steinbeck_Pocket_Book)\r \r [1]: https://openlibrary.org/works/OL23165W/The_Grapes_of_Wrath_The_Moon_is_Down_Cannery_Row_East_of_Eden_Of_Mice_and_Men

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1060/1663/files/view_archive_fecaf67b-84ba-40ab-a657-bfaf06edc595.jpg?v=1780459128
the-trials-of-apollo-book-one-the-hidden-oracle-rick-riordan
The Trials of Apollo Book One The Hidden Oracle
The Trials of Apollo Book One The Hidden Oracle
Author: Rick Riordan

Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

Year: 2016

Book by Riordan, Rick
Author: Rick Riordan

Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

Year: 2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1060/1663/files/view_archive_52d448d4-c21d-48ed-a9a7-322459a2a2bc.jpg?v=1780459132
will-grayson-will-grayson-john-green-david-levithan
Will Grayson, Will Grayson
Book by Green, John, Levithan, David
Author: John Green, David Levithan

Publisher: Speak

Year: 2011

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1060/1663/files/view_archive_9d7825ee-6ddc-4f8a-a78f-41cc392b5300.jpg?v=1780459133
the-geography-of-you-and-me-jennifer-e-smith
The Geography of You and Me

"Sparks fly when sixteen-year-old Lucy Patterson and seventeen-year-old Owen Buckley meet on an elevator rendered useless by a New York City blackout. By presenting his model philosopher across a fifty-year span of his life, Plato leads his readers to wonder: does that time period correspond to the development of Socrates' thought? In this magisterial investigation of the evolution of Socrates' philosophy, Laurence Lampert answers in the affirmative. The chronological route that Plato maps for us, Lampert argues, reveals the enduring record of philosophy as it gradually took the form that came to dominate the life of the mind in the West. The reader accompanies Socrates as he breaks with the century-old tradition of philosophy, turns to his own path, gradually enters into a deeper understanding of nature and human nature, and discovers the successful way to transmit his wisdom to the wider world. Focusing on the final and most prominent step in that process and offering detailed textual analysis of Plato's Protagoras, Charmides, and Republic, How Philosophy Became Socratic charts Socrates' gradual discovery of a proper politics to shelter and advance philosophy.
Author: Laurence Lampert

Publisher: University of Chicago Press

Year: 2010

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1060/1663/files/view_archive_f5ec8ee0-01b6-4735-b88d-6779001ae392.jpg?v=1780459155
the-gay-science-with-a-prelude-in-rhymes-and-an-appendix-of-songs-friedrich-nietzsche
The Gay Science: With a Prelude in Rhymes and an Appendix of Songs
Book by Nietzsche, Friedrich
Author: Friedrich Nietzsche

Publisher: Vintage

Year: 1974

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1060/1663/files/view_archive_0354c50f-53ea-4f88-b78b-68b6ceb567a3.jpg?v=1780459156
sons-and-lovers-d-h-lawrence
Sons And Lovers
Sons and Lovers was the first modern portrayal of a phenomenon that later, thanks to Freud, became easily recognizable as the Oedipus complex. Never was a son more indentured to his mother's love and full of hatred for his father than Paul Morel, D.H. Lawrence's young protagonist. Never, that is, except perhaps Lawrence himself. In his 1913 novel he grappled with the discordant loves that haunted him all his life--for his spiritual childhood sweetheart, here called Miriam, and for his mother, whom he transformed into Mrs. Morel. It is, by Lawrence's own account, a book aimed at depicting this woman's grasp: "as her sons grow up she selects them as lovers--first the eldest, then the second. These sons are urged into life by their reciprocal love of their mother--urged on and on. But when they come to manhood, they can't love, because their mother is the strongest power in their lives." Of course, Mrs. Morel takes neither of her two elder sons (the first of whom dies early, which further intensifies her grip on Paul) as a literal lover, but nonetheless her psychological snare is immense. She loathes Paul's Miriam from the start, understanding that the girl's deep love of her son will oust her: "She's not like an ordinary woman, who can leave me my share in him. She wants to absorb him." Meanwhile, Paul plays his part with equal fervor, incapable of committing himself in either direction: "Why did his mother sit at home and suffer?... And why did he hate Miriam, and feel so cruel towards her, at the thought of his mother. If Miriam caused his mother suffering, then he hated her--and he easily hated her." Soon thereafter he even confesses to his mother: "I really don't love her. I talk to her, but I want to come home to you." The result of all this is that Paul throws Miriam over for a married suffragette, Clara Dawes, who fulfills the sexual component of his ascent to manhood but leaves him, as ever, without a complete relationship to challenge his love for his mother. As Paul voyages from the working-class mining world to the spheres of commerce and art (he has fair success as a painter), he accepts that his own achievements must be equally his mother's. "There was so much to come out of him. Life for her was rich with promise. She was to see herself fulfilled... All his work was hers." The cycles of Paul's relationships with these three women are terrifying at times, and Lawrence does nothing to dim their intensity. Nor does he shirk in his vivid, sensuous descriptions of the landscape that offers up its blossoms and beasts and "shimmeriness" to Paul's sensitive spirit. Sons and Lovers lays fully bare the souls of men and earth. Few books tell such whole, complicated truths about the permutations of love as resolutely without resolution. It's nothing short of searing to be brushed by humanity in this manner. --Melanie Rehak
Author: D H Lawrence

Publisher: Penguin UK

Year: 1981

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1060/1663/files/view_archive_739f9bdd-364e-41ed-a444-62ed5bf71902.jpg?v=1780459158
othello-william-shakespeare
Othello

Author: William Shakespeare

Publisher: Signet Classics

Year: 1962

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1060/1663/files/view_archive_45670002-8fa8-4c06-a15d-575cd7066f31.jpg?v=1780459161
guinness-world-records-2010-guinness-world-records
Guinness World Records 2010
Guinness World Records 2010 keeps on expanding on the fascinating, educational, rousing and instructional records and superlatives that have made Guinness World Records a standout among the most well known brands and a yearly success far and wide.
